The use of transparent watercolor
is a conscious choice in this series for transparent pigment allows
light to show through to achieve a more luminous image.
Transparency of a pigment is determined by applying a brush full of
strong paint over a black waterproof line or drawing. If the black
line shows through clearly, the pigment is said to be transparent.
If, however, the black line is covered, then the pigment is said to
be opaque.
In seeking to capture the effect of light, transparent paints best
suit the desired illusion for they allow the greatest amount of
light to pass through from the white of the paper reflecting the
image back to the viewer.
